I wish I was joking BUT…sorry, not sorry! What’s funny is I remember writing about this last year when I was on the West Coast for a few weeks. You can read it HERE. While I don’t have a car right now in California, my main mode of transportation has been by foot.
And, guess what, I kind of like it.
Sure, it would be nice to have a car, once in a while – you should see me juggling groceries – but I have so enjoyed the clarity, perspective, and overall freedom I have received from, well, just WALKING.
Yes, WALKING; something we TOTALLY take for granted, yet I find it to be SO underrated! I admit, I am guilty of taking the easy way out at times when I have access to my car. The business of “not having enough time” or “I have to get this done quickly” are the usual excuses. I will say that the walking “view” in Baltimore is definitely NOT like the view in Santa Monica. I mean, look at THESE PALM TREES…#nevergetsold
I have to wonder that IF I did more of THIS, would my overall well-being, health, and even creative inspiration come full circle? Meaning, for the THOUSANDS of miles I have walked since being in Santa Monica for the last 2 weeks, it’s, truly, amazing what I have seen, the people I have met, and how the creative juices are starting to flow again. The very creativity and passion that has been gone for quite some time.
Can you relate by chance?
I do need to keep in perspective that a lot of this could be the change of environment; I may not feel the same way when I (if I – lol) return to Baltimore. Side Note: I will see how many people actually read my blog if there is a comment to this very statement! 🙂 It’s something that I am willing to give a try though…especially if it helps me FEEL the best I have felt in a really long time!
So, you may be wondering how any of this has to do with being in bed by 8:00 pm. Honestly, it goes back to the statement I made about walking being SUPER underrated. I mean, I am exhausted by the end of the day…and I can’t even admit that I am power walking (more like crawling).
Let me share with you a story about my recent adventure to Brentwood, and how my business partner totally called me out! This is my 5th time to Santa Monica in the last 10 years and I have never been to Brentwood. I am not sure why – I mean, who would’t want to spot Ben Affleck and Reese Witherspoon – but I knew it was a DEFINITE destination while I was here. Lots of shops, restaurants, fitness studios, and, you know, very #fit4janine. One of the fitness classes I wanted to check out – Burn60 – has a location there so I thought this was the perfect opportunity to finally see it!
I google mapped on my phone, I took a blind eye to the fact that it was an 1 1/2 hour walk, and I laced up my shoes. Prior to starting, I did walk to the bank, pharmacy, and post office.
Okay, now I was ready.
Needless to say, the walk was GORGEOUS…and the walk was close to 4 miles, mainly uphill. Again, not a huge deal but, as the sun came out, and the heat started to rise, I was feeling like my Burn60 class was going to turn into more of a Namaste60 class. Here is picture of me once I made it to my destination!
I got through the class, with lots of modifications on the treadmill – seriously, the quads, hamstrings, and glutes were MAXED – and then I had to make the decision.
Do I walk it back or hop in an Uber? Well, I grabbed a smoothie, got my game face on, AND, about 30 minutes in, my Uber app was out faster than I could talk myself out of it! I sent the receipt to my business partner, Daria, with the caption “I could not walk anymore.” Ha! Needless to say, she totally called me out on it!
So, the moral of this story…START WALKING! Not only will it improve your well-being and health, you may even get some extra shut-eye too (gotta’ love that 8:00 pm Grandma status)!
AND, please be mindful that if you walk close to 4 miles one way, make sure you know you have to walk the same amount BACK. HA!
