I have always been a rule follower. I was the one in school who, when the teacher said “no working on homework during class,” I would obey. Meanwhile, everyone around me would be doing so and I would be perplexed as to why no one would listen. Even at 30 years old I, still, have a hard time jumping the gated fence around the local, public turf to get in a sprint workout. Yes, everyone does it BUT the sign reads “you need a permit.”
Believe me, I am by no means “perfect,” and, yes, I have broken some “rules,” BUT I am a firm believer that there is a reason why rules are implemented and put in place. If we did not have them, who knows what would ensue. Maybe it is my “Type A,” structured personality that likes having guidelines to follow. I don’t thrive on chaos or being disorganized; I prefer neat, orderly, and systematic.
I am going to let you in on a little secret though…lately, I kind of like breaking the rules. It’s freeing. It’s exhilarating. It’s being down right rebellious.
Over the last 4 weeks, I have shared insight and strategies to get you on the path of finding solutions to your lifestyle “struggles.” While I received great feedback on the content delivered, I did have some of you reach out and say “Omgosh, this feels so overwhelming. Where do I even start?” I love the honesty – and I love the question. My response?
“I highly encourage you to start breaking the rules.”
When it comes to fitness and fat loss, I am a total rule breaker. In fact, I question these so-called “rules” every single day. Who says that you MUST eat breakfast in order to stay in fat loss mode? Where did you hear if you consume starchy carbohydrates at night YOU WILL gain weight? Working out for 45-60 minutes, 4-5 days per week, is the only way you see physique results. Talk about comical! This is one area of my life where I don’t mind “living on the edge.”
If there is one thing I have learned over the last 10 years is that the only person who knows what TRULY works for them is that person. A magazine, book, friend, and even fitness professional can only suggest and recommend. Start questioning the rules.
Two glasses of wine each night helps me sleep better and not crave junk food – score!
Protein and healthy fat for breakfast keeps me satisfied for hours – love me some egg yolks and bacon!
I eat a pop-tart post-workout to replenish my glycogen stores (and get in my sweet fix) – brings back my childhood!
It is through trial and error that you will develop a customized, UNIQUE approach to living a healthy, sustainable lifestyle without ever feeling deprived and without ever going “on or off” a plan. Make up the rules as you go. There is no limit…there is only FOREVER.
