When We Stop Opposing Reality…

By: Janine Serio

The term “lifestyle change” is pretty broad. The 2 Health Nuts define lifestyle change from a wellness perspective – fitness, fat loss, and behavioral change – but that, of course, is just one way of looking at it.

Change is good; it’s a positive. In order to learn and grow, change needs to happen. Staying “status quo” keeps you stagnate and ah hem, boring, right? While change comes in many shapes, sizes, and kinds, what happens when it is unexpected? Here you are, navigating along in life, and, wham, change hits you like a ton of bricks. I am not referring to your favorite restaurant going out of business, or your Thursday night TV line-up is now moving to a different night. I am talking about change that affects you deeply…the kind that gets you at your core and makes you feel weak at the knees. It’s the kind of change that leaves you unable to keep your head above water and constantly gasping for breath. This change alters every aspect of your daily life – sleep, hunger, physical activity, emotions, etc.

What happens when this change forces itself into your life and you have absolutely no control? Your “perfect” world is broken, and you are left to pick up the pieces…by yourself.

The struggle is real. This has become your new reality. No one says it will be easy. No one expects you to “all of the sudden” be okay. No one blames you. You may even find yourself asking, “Was/is this my fate? What could I have done differently? Is this a lesson from a greater force that I will, eventually, understand?”

While cliché, it truly is about time. It is about healing. It is about putting one foot in front of the other and going through the motions (and emotions). It is about being comforted and nurtured, and allowing yourself to cry and be angry. It is about reflecting on the good times and leaning into the struggle and heartbreak of what (or who) is no longer in your life. There will be days that feel easier than others, and some that will have you not wanting to even talk or think.

For those who know me {Janine, one of the “2 Health Nuts”}, you are aware of the place this is coming from. For others, you may be able to draw your own conclusions. As change occurs, especially ones that knock you down, it takes time to put yourself back in the ring. I am working on being open (again). To be honest, being vulnerable seems scarier than it once was.

I keep asking myself the question –

“How can you “show up,” be totally vulnerable and authentic, when you feel nothing but pain, sadness, and rejection?”

When change happens – I am talking the hard, surreal change – we tend to revert. We stop “showing up” and our authenticity begins to diminish. We deflect, make excuses, even distort reality to others because we don’t want to “go there.” We don’t want to feel that pain. We don’t want to feel the hurt and rejection.  We start to feel like we do not deserve “things.” We go into autopilot.

Now, you may be reading and wondering how exactly this ties in to our approach when it comes to making a lifestyle change…I am getting there, promise!

Telling this story was two-fold – a cathartic way to start  “letting people in” (even if it’s in front of a computer screen) and to also show how lifestyle change can span many parameters, everything from overall health and relationships, to personal development and business .  Yes, change is good, but there is a process involved to get us to the point where we feel “okay.” This past year has been humbling, and while starting out on a new journey (and a new decade, too), I am slowly starting to see the world from a totally different perspective.

As we {Janine Serio & Daria Shaw…the “2 Health Nuts”) bring our health and wellness brand to the online space, we want to connect with our audience on a whole different level. Words cannot begin to express the pride that I feel at this very moment after reading what I know has been the toughest thing you have ever had to write. We have cried , we have laughed , we have had our emotions stretched to the limit over this past year and at times struggled with how to keep going. Your strength has persevered and you can now look forward to this new journey (and decade) and know that there are many good things to come!!

Wow, I feel like fate brought me to this page…
I found you through Instagram, and then stumbled onto this entry which feels like it was meant for me to read. Where do I begin? Sexual abuse in my youth turned into addiction and bulimia in my early 20’s. Recovery brought me to yoga which (quite literally, I think) saved my life. I was on such a great path there for awhile…. until 2015 “gifted” me with the death of a close family member; then bonus surprise! A divorce out of nowhere (in my eyes anyway). I gained ten pounds and my yoga practice happened a lot less. Now I have stronger days where I get “back in the saddle”… and terrible days where I have one foot in the stirrup while the horse drags me behind.
Thank you for reminding me that I will be okay. I’m going to finally achieve the perfect wheel pose, and I’m getting ready to start the vegetable garden that will bring me health and fun, and I’ll watch Game of Thrones alone (er, with my cat) this year. And be okay. Somehow. So, thank you for this entry which randomly found me. ❤️‍
